Yousuf (3y) loves to do squishy/symmetrical painting, a bit too much maybe as we go through like 10 pieces of paper when we do it. But It gives him an insight into basic symmetry and colour so I don’t mind! This is a good activity for 2+ and also a great activity to expose your toddler to new words like ‘half’ and what it means – and the colours, relating them to objects such as green leaves.
Not a lot involved in this, just fold the paper in half (explain it’s a half) and open the page and get them to squirt, spoon or brush some paint on one side of the paper (ask them to relate colours to their environment), then tell them to fold the blank side over onto the paint and then press down onto the paper to make sure it’s made contact, then for the fun part let your kid pull away on the paper and watch them as their amazed about how the paint has transferred to the other side, and then point out how it’s symmetrical too. Be prepared for them wanting to do it again and again…!
